About Mason SafeCam

Mason SafeCam is a voluntary camera registration program operated by Mason County Emergency Communications (MACECOM). It allows residents and businesses in Mason County, Washington to securely register the general location of their privately owned security cameras so law enforcement can quickly see where video may exist after a crime or major incident.

SafeCam does not give MACECOM or law enforcement live access to your cameras. It simply lets officers know:

  • Where cameras are located (approximate map location)
  • What areas they generally cover (roadways, driveways, parking lots, building exterior, trails, etc.)
  • Who to contact if video may be helpful to an investigation

How SafeCam Helps the Community

In a rural county like Mason County, traditional door-to-door canvassing for video can take hours. SafeCam reduces that time by giving officers a secure, county-wide map of participating cameras. This can help:

  • Identify suspect vehicles or persons faster
  • Locate missing or vulnerable people more quickly
  • Document hit-and-runs, thefts, vandalism, and other crimes
  • Support emergency response during major incidents and disasters

What Registration Means (and What It Does Not)

When you register your cameras:

  • You provide your contact information and general camera details (location, coverage, retention).
  • Your cameras appear on a secure map that only authorized law enforcement personnel can access.
  • If an incident occurs near your location, an officer or dispatcher may contact you to ask whether you are willing to review or share relevant footage.

Registration does not mean:

  • Live access or remote login to your cameras by MACECOM or any agency.
  • A requirement that you share video in every situation.
  • Public disclosure of your camera details on a public map or website.

Privacy and Security

We understand that privacy is important. SafeCam is designed with the following principles:

  • Voluntary participation: You can opt out or delete your registration at any time.
  • Controlled access: Only authorized public safety personnel can view the SafeCam map.
  • Approximate mapping: Locations shown to officers are intended to be accurate enough for investigations but are not shared publicly.
  • Limited use: SafeCam information is used to support public safety investigations and emergency response, not for routine surveillance.

Who Can Participate?

SafeCam is open to:

  • Homeowners and tenants
  • Small businesses and large commercial properties
  • Schools, faith-based organizations, and community groups
  • HOAs, neighborhood watch groups, and property managers

How to Register

  1. Create an account using your name, email, and basic contact information.
  2. Add your camera location(s) by entering your address and confirming the approximate map position.
  3. Describe each camera (for example, “Faces the front driveway and street” or “Covers parking lot and building entrance”) and note how long footage is saved.
  4. Keep your information up to date if you move, change camera coverage, or remove cameras.

Registration takes only a few minutes and can make a meaningful difference in how quickly first responders can solve cases and protect the community.
